On the morning of June 10, 2025, at Room 505, Building E3, Information Technology Institute, Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU), the VNU-level Doctoral Dissertation Defense Ceremony of PhD candidate Le Ngoc Thang took place. The dissertation, titled “Research and Development of Some Techniques for Summarizing Vietnamese Online News Texts,” falls under the major of Information Systems Management. The research was supervised by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham Bao Son (Vietnam National University, Hanoi) and Dr. Le Quang Minh (Information Technology Institute, VNU).
Representing the Information Technology Institute at the ceremony were Prof. Tran Xuan Tu – Director; Dr. Le Quang Minh – Deputy Director; and Dr. Duong Quang Khanh – Head of the Department of Science, Technology, and Training.

Key Contributions of the Dissertation:
- Built a corpus tailored to the characteristics of Vietnamese online news articles for testing text summarization methods.
- Proposed a summarization method for Vietnamese online news based on a graph model using sentence similarity that reflects the genre’s unique features.
- Proposed a BERT-based summarization approach for Vietnamese online news that integrates inherent document knowledge.
After listening to the candidate’s presentation and responses, the council unanimously agreed that the content and form of the dissertation fully meet the requirements for a doctoral degree in Information Systems Management. The council congratulated PhD candidate Le Ngoc Thang on successfully defending his VNU-level doctoral dissertation.
In his closing remarks, PhD candidate Le Ngoc Thang expressed his deep gratitude for the dedicated guidance of his supervisors Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham Bao Son and Dr. Le Quang Minh, and extended his thanks to the dissertation evaluation council, the Information Technology Institute, the Command Information Center of the Ministry of Public Security (his workplace), as well as friends, colleagues, and especially his family for their unwavering support and encouragement throughout his doctoral journey.
